Mark your calendars for a royal wedding! Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are engaged, Clarence house announced early Monday morning. The Prince, 33, popped the question to the American actress, 36, earlier this month at their cottage in London.
The lovebirds began dating in July of 2016, set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. The two were able to keep the relationship under wraps until early November 2017. The relationship was officially confirmed when Prince Harry defended Markle against the sexist amd racist she was receiving on social media. In a statement made by Kensington Palace, the Prince was worried about her safety and that "This is not a game--it is her life and his."
In May of this year, they attended their first public event together at a polo match where Markle cheered on the Prince. This past September the pair made their first official public appearance together, holding hands on the way to the annual Paralympic Invictus games. While the appearance was casual, they could not hide their affection towards each other and were caught kissing during closing ceremonies.
With the Suits actress filming in Toronto, the two have survived the challenge of long distance. They say the key for them was never going more than two weeks without seeing each other. Together they visited Africa, for Markle's birthday, saw the northern lights in Norway for the New Year, and relaxed on the Jamaican beach. However, the most important visit was to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen and to have tea, of course.
Prince Harry received the blessing from Markle's parents, and Markle has received approval from the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip stated they are "delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness." The actress even hit it off with extended family, being invited to Pippa Middleton's wedding before the engagement took place.
The actress announced the seventh season of Suits will be her final season as she will be preparing for a new lifestyle. Markle will take a break from acting to focus more on the charitable causes that she is already an ambassador for. In the interview with Sky News, Markle said "I don't see it as giving anything up. I just see it as a change." One possible change is Prince Harry being declared the Duke of Sussex, making Markle the Duchess of Sussex on their wedding day.
The wedding is scheduled for May of 2018 and will be the biggest royal wedding since Prince William and Duchess Kate wed in 2011. It is also the first time an American is marrying a direct heir to the throne since 1937, Prince Harry being fifth in the British line of succession after his niece Princess Charlotte.
May the two have a happy engagement and live happily ever after!
