The wait is finally over! After weeks of anticipation, Vogue has finally announced the theme and co-chairs for the 2019 MET Gala, a prestigious event that fundraises for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York. The gala marks the annual opening of the Costume Institute’s fashion exhibit. The event will take place on May 6, 2019.

The theme of next year’s event will be “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator, described this year’s theme as “irony, humor, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality, excess, extravagance, nostalgia, and exaggeration.” While this theme is quite different from 2018’s “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, there is much to look forward to as stars try and one-up last year’s fashions!

With Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Alessandro Michele, and Anna Wintour co-chairing the event, it is sure to be one of the more memorable MET Gala’s in recent years.

Harry Styles is a wildly successful musician, recently having concluded his world tour; He also made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. He is known for his bold style choices; he wore a plethora of custom Gucci suits on tour, and is featured in the fashion house’s top 5 most liked Instagram posts. Styles also starred in Gucci’s latest men’s tailoring campaign, driving fans into a frenzy. His contribution will be amazing, especially because it will be alongside Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele.

Lady Gaga, a world-famous talented musician and actress, has recently been in the spotlight because of her leading role in A Star is Born. She, too, has made some daring fashion choices in her time, an example being the meat dress she wore to VMAs several years ago. She headlined the 2017 Superbowl Halftime Show, has sold out venues across the globe, and is an outspoken advocate for sexual assault survivors.

Serena Williams is arguably one of the best athletes on the planet; she is a tennis superstar, winning 23 Grand Slam titles throughout her magnificent career. She is also a mother, and an advocate for women’s and mother’s rights. Her focuses include closing the gender pay gap, better maternity rights for women, and equal treatment of male and female athletes.

Anna Wintour is a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world. She is Vogue’s editor-in-chief, the artistic director of Condé Nast, and undoubtedly, a legendary style icon who has been rocking the signature bob since she was 15 years old. Wintour will co-chair the event, as she does every year.

As celebrities begin preparations for the renowned event, let’s take a deeper look at the theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion.”The word “camp” can be traced back to the French verb se camper, which is associated with flamboyance, exaggeration, and surplus. Simply put, we can certainly expect extravagant, over-the-top, striking outfits choices from next year’s attendees! Below is a gallery of some of the best camp looks from the past!
